According to half of the sites or organisations I consulted, the only squirrel present in Spain is the Red Squirrel. The other half state that there is both the Red and Grey squirrel in the peninsular.
Years ago, up by the Nerja Caves, we regularly spotted Black Squirrels and local reports said these were the result of an Aussie tourist illegally importing and releasing them. However, it now seems to be the prevailing opinion that the only black squirrels are melanistic individuals (Melanism is the congenital excess of melanin in an organism resulting in dark pigmentation of the skin or fur).
Be that as it may, I like squirrels and these are a couple of varieties from West Africa.
The Striped Ground Squirrel, Euxerus erythropus, is a largish ground squirrel, ranging from 22 to 29 centimetres (8.7 to 11.4 in) in length, with a tail of between 19 and 26 centimetres (7.5 to 10.2 in), nearly as long as the body.
Quite large squirrels. Interestingly, in Spain the squirrels get larger the further south you go and darker the further north you venture.
The Gambian Sun Squirrel, Heliosciurus gambianus, has a head-and-body length of between 170 and 240 mm (6.7 and 9.4 in) and a tail of between 180 and 260 mm (7.1 and 10.2 in).
