During the VIII century, Phoenician merchants roamed the Mediterranean Sea and founded many settlements along the way. Malac, also known as Noctiluca, was a Phoenician deity associated with night and the moon.

Her theonym, Malaka, is thought by some to possibly be the origin of the city name Málaga.

Jaime F Pimentel is the sculptor of this bronze statue and it is located just off the promenade in Rincón de la Victoria.
