Spanish Festoon

The Spanish Festoon, Zerynthia rumina, is a fairly common butterfly in Iberia and southern France and is a member of the Papillonidae family.

You will generally see it flying around in April and May, although a small, second brood, may also be seen in September. Very colourful and happy to pose with wings open.

It is quite a distinctive butterfly and can only occasionally be confused with the Southern Festoon, Zerynthia polyxena, where their territories overlap in southern France. The Southern Festoon, however, has little or no red on forewing and has some blue on hindwing. The Spanish Festoon has no blue at all on the hindwing.
