Staying with kingfishers, this is the Woodland Kingfisher, Halcyon senegalensis, a medium-sized bird found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It grows to around 23cm (9.1 inches) in length and has a large bill which is red (upper mandible) and black (lower mandible). Adults have a blue back, wing panel and tail and the head, neck and underparts are greyish-white.
These kingfishers, contrary to what one might normally expect, often live far from any water and nest in trees in holes previously made by woodpeckers or barbets.
